6 amazing days spent in New York City!! Where do I begin?
Having been selected to attend the United Nations Youth Climate Summit is definately the highlight of my life so far! What an honour and what a priviledge!! I am so grateful to my family, friends and school who have supported me and helped me get to NY!! Thank you all so much for all the messages of support…really means the world to me!!
Thank you to my amazing boyfriend, Joshua, who acted as my chaperone and who was, and always is, a constant support in all that I do!! Thank you to my parents for allowing me to go and for always trusing and believing in me! Your support means the world and I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for you!
It was an incredible experience…the city, the people, the sounds, the sights! Just WOW! Being in New York for the global Climate strike on 20 September and attending the Youth Climate Summit was such an incredible experience! Seeing Greta Thunberg in person … listening to her speak … priceless! There were so many amazing people at the Summit, and to be there with so many like-minded individuals, hearing their stories, seeing what they are all doing to help save our planet was so inspiring and heart-warming! I feel so motivated and positive now…ready to take on the world and make it a better place for my children and my children’s children! I want to do more. I want to do more beach cleanups. More community cleanups. Find more ways to reduce plastic consumption. Find more alternatives. Find more ways to make our voices heard. I want to plant more trees. I want to save more fishies! I want to do it all!
At the United Nations Youth Climate Summit I represented not only myself and my Save a Fishie business, but also my incredibly supportive Edgemead High School and the Interact club. I represent Girl Guides… particularly my Bothasig family… they have been a HUGE influence on my life and started me on my eco journey when I attended my first beach cleanup at age 10! I represent the African Climate Alliance, which I am a member of and also the media liaison. I am so proud of how they have grown and how well they have organized the climate strikes in Cape Town! I represent Cape Town, which I love. I represent South Africa!! I represent my beloved Milnerton Lagoon, where I do the majority of my beach cleanups. I represent my family and friends, who stand by me.
You have all played a part in who I am today. You have all supported me and I thank you all.
